By now, most consumers are familiar with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and their stringent crash safety testing. Also, most are familiar with the IIHS rating scale with TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ designations. If you’re unfamiliar, the IIHS Top Safety Pick awards are the gold standard for vehicle safety ratings, as they are the most thorough in testing and their awards are the most widely recognized in the industry. Subaru of America and their team of engineers take great pride in developing some of the safest vehicles on the market.
Most recently in this year’s testing, the 2022 Subaru Outback was the only midsize car model tested that received a top rating in the IIHS’s new side-impact tests. What Is the IIHS TESTING?
Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ are awards given annually by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to recognize outstanding achievements in vehicle safety. In order to be considered for the "Top Safety Pick+" award in 2022, vehicles had to receive a ‘Good’ rating in all six of the IIHS's crashworthiness evaluations, Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ headlight ratings, and available front crash prevention ranked as ‘Advanced’ or ‘Superior’ ratings in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. More than any other manufacturer, Subaru has been honored with 63 TOP SAFETY PICK+ distinctions since 2013 (as of July 2022).
This year, the IIHS introduced a new, more stringent side-impact test as part of its ongoing efforts to improve vehicle safety and to address the higher-speed crashes that continue to cause fatalities. Out of the seven midsize cars tested this year, the 2022 Subaru Outback was the only model to receive the highest possible rating on the new side-impact test. In addition, the Outback once again has earned the 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, where it earned the highest possible rating for all crashworthiness and crash avoidance tests.
The Subaru Outback’s Safety Features
It’s not a surprise that the new Subaru Outback was rated TSP+ considering the plethora of safety features and driver assists it has available. First, the new Outback was reengineered with a new, stiffer frame and eight standard airbags. Also, Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist Technology comes standard on the Outback.
